How we welcome, connect and celebrate volunteers in sport really matters!
So we've put together some top tips to help you support them and develop them into the loyal, happy and fantastic volunteers, and keeping them motivated you really desire, and keep them coming back time after time.

PLANNING – THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP

  • Make a Volunteer Plan and follow through on it
  • Make it a habit to have “Volunteers” on the agenda
  • Make a recruitment plan

VOLUNTEER COORDINATORS

  • Appoint your best and most enthusiastic communicators as Volunteer Coordinators.  They are the go to people for volunteer advice.

CRITICAL TIMES TO FOCUS ON

  • The key times to focus your attention on are at the beginning of the season and welcoming any new volunteers

MAKE IT EASY TO SAY YES AND BE CLEAR WHAT IS TO BE DONE

  • Make a “TASK WALL” and post small, easy to do tasks that volunteers can “gift” their time to – bigger tasks require a written and verbal briefing plus resources

SUPPORT AND DEVELOP YOUR VOLUNTEERS

  • Ensure volunteers are safe and given ongoing training and support to carry out their tasks. Promote pathways and opportunities for them to develop their capabilities
