Programme Overview

The University welcomes students who are looking to combine high-level rugby with academic study, and our High Performance Manager works with these students to ensure they can succeed at uni and at the same time meet their national or international rugby commitments. Current student Mitch Karpik plays for the Maori All Blacks. All Black Damian McKenzie is a former student along with Charlie Ngatai and Anton Leinert-Brown who have played for the University club and former All Black Stephen Donald, the man who saved the 2011 World Cup, graduated from the University of Waikato in 2017 with a Bachelor of Management Studies along with World champion women’s Black Fern Stacey Waaka who also graduated in 2017. University of Waikato Rugby Club (UWRC) Whether you want to socialise and have fun or play competitively at an elite level, students at the University of Waikato can reach their full potential playing for UWRC. Based on campus at the Don Llewellyn Sports Pavilion, UWRC is the rugby club of choice for students in the Waikato. With four men’s rugby teams ranging from Premier level through to social and one women’s team, the club caters for players of all ability. UWRC student members are also given the opportunity to trial for the New Zealand Universities team. UWRC has a 50 year tradition of providing the best platform for talented rugby players to reach higher honours and to provide members with team experiences they can cherish for life. The club fosters inclusiveness with past players remaining linked with the sport through the Varstonians and the opportunity to provide for The University of Waikato is a premier academic institution that aims to build well-rounded graduates who excel both inside and outside the lecture theatres students not only as players, but as managers, coaches and administrators. Female Waikato students have the opportunity to represent the University of Waikato at the University and Tertiary Sport New Zealand (UTSNZ) National Tertiary Sevens Championships every year. The annual tournament is held in a different city around New Zealand, where all of the New Zealand Universities and some Tertiary Institutes come together to compete for the National shield.
