Who do we work with, and what do they do?

We collaborate with a lot of great programmes to help schools get the most of what is on offer in the Waikato


Fruit in Schools

Visit Fruit in Schools websiteThe Fruit in Schools (FIS) programme is a Ministry of Health initiative focused on improving children’s learning through promoting the health of the school community.There are four areas of FIS:

  1. Healthy eating
  2. Physical activity
  3. Being SunSmart
  4. Being SmokeFree
Active Schools

Visit SPARC websiteA SPARC initiative with a focus on a whole school community working together to be an “Active School” with benefits to children and adults. Active Schools:

  • Creates opportunities for all children to be active, based on their needs, abilities and interests
  • Involves the whole school community; the whole community takes ownership of an active environment
  • Encourages children to be active for life
Feeding our futures

Visit Feeding our Futures websiteFeeding our Futures is a part of Healthy Eating-Healthy Action (HEHA), the Ministry of Health’s strategic approach to improving nutrition, increasing physical activity and achieving healthy weight for all New Zealanders.

School Support Services

School Support Services provides teacher support and guidance by facilitating teacher development programmes in schools throughout the Waikato, Hauraki, Coromandel, King Country, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Wairoa and East Coast Regions. School Support Services are part of the services offered by the University of Waikato, School of Education.

Jump Rope for Heart

Visit Jump Rope for Heart websiteSince its beginnings in 1985, more than one million New Zealand children have participated in The National Heart Foundation of New Zealand's Jump Rope for Heart (JRFH) programme.

The programme has established itself as a leading physical education resource for schools across the country. The programme is a valuable tool in promoting the importance of physical activity and healthy lifestyles to primary and intermediate-aged students, as they learn age-appropriate, curriculum-based skipping and movement skills from the educational resource.

Healthy Heart Award for Schools

The National Heart Foundation's Healthy Heart Award for Schools provides your school with resources, guidance and support to develop an environment that encourages healthy eating.

The programme takes a whole-school approach to healthy eating and is offered free to all schools. It can assist your school community to identify and address a wide range of healthy eating issues.

Four levels of Heartbeat Awards will provide recognition of your school's commitment towards fostering an environment that encourages healthy eating.

Health Promoting Schools

Visit Health Promoting Schools websiteHealth Promoting Schools (HPS) is a worldwide movement developed by the World Health Organisation in the early 1990s to promote and support the health and wellbeing of children and young people. Since 1997, many schools in New Zealand have become part of this movement.

HPS is project based, and aimed at changing the school environment to make the healthy choice the easy choice. It involves a whole of school approach and encourages the active participation of young people in decision making. In addition to smokefree, HPS initiatives have focused on issues such as:

  • Supporting and promoting staff and student wellbeing
  • Improving nutrition (healthy food choices at school)
  • playground safety (physical, social and emotional)
Waikato Institute of Leisure and Sports Studies

The Waikato Institute for Leisure & Sport Studies (known as WILSS, pronounced 'WILLS') has been delivering education in the Waikato region for past 17 years.

WILSS is a not-for-profit training provider registered with NZQA offering a range of programmes designed to enhance personal development and increase participants' contribution to sport and leisure.

SportsForce

Visit SportsForce pageSportsForce is a programme managed by Sport Waikato and funded by Trust Waikato. SportsForce Development Officers are employed by their sport to Help make Sport Happen, working with volunteers to recruit, train and retain.

SportsForce commenced in 1999 and aims to increase participation in sport by building a larger base of committed and active volunteers.

SportsForce is a partnership between Sport Waikato and Regional Sporting Organisations which allows major sporting codes to employ Regional Development Officers to develop and grow their support's volunteer base.
