SportStart

SportStart is an innovative new programme, unique to the Taupo district that encourages and supports local people to join sport clubs.

Managed by Sport Waikato and funded by SPARC Active Communities, SportStart is all about getting people started in club sport for the first time. SportStart Coordinators are currently working with 12 clubs in the Taupo, Turangi and Managakino areas to assist them with recruiting and welcoming new members and helping them to raise their profile.

What's on in Taupo district?
"Give it a Go" Sessions
‘Give golf a go’ sessions a hit with first time golfers

Taupo Golf Club has been giving local people a taste of golf.

The club’s ‘give golf a go’ sessions set by Nick O’Brien, a NZPGA professional, covered hitting balls on the driving range, chipping and putting, bunkers and trying out the course - all under the watchful eye of Nick.

The programme ran for three weeks, then if participants decided they wanted to continue they could move on to the ‘next step’
programme. This included coaching to improve hitting the ball, chipping and putting and also getting out on the course and going through
the basic rules and etiquette of the game.

After this an introductory membership deal was offered to those who wanted to join the club. Over 30 people signed up through SportStart for the sessions. It was a real mix of people, from early 20s through to retired people and everyone in between.

Of the 30 who went through the sessions, 75% carried on to the ‘next step’ programme and six went on to become club members.

Comments from participants:
• ‘The programme was fun’
• ‘A lot less intimidating than I thought it would be’
• ‘Great to meet other golfers to play with who were at the same level’
• ‘A great way to wind down at the end of a day's work’

Taupo Golf Club are planning a similar programme this year, starting with the three week ‘give golf a go’ course on 11 October. For more details contact SportStart Coordinator Aniek.
