Local boxer scoops top award at annual awards

An outstanding year for Daniel MacKinnon has seen him named Sportsperson of the Year at last nights King Country Energy Otorohanga District Sports Awards. Sport Waikato Otorohanga district coordinator Robbie Matthews said the award highlighted Daniel’s success in the boxing ring both nationally and internationally. “Daniel is a real inspiration to not only other boxers, but all of our local sportspeople,” Robbie said. “His achievements both nationally and internationally are fantastic and it’s great to have the opportunity to acknowledge him in his own district.” Daniel is the New Zealand professional middleweight champion, retained the WBO Oriental Super Middleweight title and after beating multiple world kick boxing champion Shane ‘Chopper’ Chapman, is ranked 12th in the world. Boxing is proving to be thriving in the district with boxing coach Glenn Brightwell taking Coach of the Year and boxer Turanga Brown named Junior Sportsman of the Year. The awards evening, held at the Otorohanga Club Function Room, are a highlight on the district calendar with local sportspeople acknowledged for outstanding achievements over the past year. 25 sportspeople from across the Otorohanga district were nominated for awards representing a wide range of sports including golf, swimming, polocrosse and netball. “These awards give the community a chance to show our sportspeople their efforts have not gone unnoticed,” said Robbie.
