He Oranga Poutama |
MORE MAORI - MORE ACTIVE - MORE OFTENHe Mihi He Oranga Poutama is based on an underlying principle for Maori sports and recreation called Omangia to Oma Roa (Kaupapa for Life).
The name He Oranga Poutama came about because the poutama design represents the climb made by Tawhaki to receive the three baskets of knowledge from the gods. He Oranga Poutama means whanau, team, hapu and iwi getting together on a marae or in a Maori environment. It is a chance to korero, have fun, celebrate, farewell and take part in marae and whanau activities such as touch, netball, eeling, kapa haka and line dancing (to name a few). He Oranga Poutama is all about developing healthy lifestyles for Maori through sport and active living. For this to be achieved, a balance between the four key elements of health is necessary. He Oranga Poutama improves Maori health and wellbeing by encouraging participation in sport and active living in a Maori environment. While Maori participation rates in sport are higher than that of other New Zealanders, health and wellbeing statistics indicate that many Maori are not active enough for their health to benefit. Sport Waikato employs two Kaiwhakahaere to coordinate He Oranga Poutama in the greater Waikato region: |
