For over 50s

Sport Waikato has plenty of options to support people aged 50 and over with their goals in sport and physical activity. Click on the headings below to learn more.

50s Forward

The 50s Forward programme is a proactive approach to ensure that people from 50 years onwards, get the best support and advice about physical activity, wellness and nutrition to be active and healthy for life.

Thanks to the support of the Local Management Group of Waikato Primary Health we can offer this programme in the South Waikato and Kawhia. The programme is very flexible and you can chose to either have someone visit you at home, or join in with the community initiatives that run throughout the year, or even better do both.

The home visits allow you time to sit down with our coordinator one on one to set goals and make plans around what you would like to achieve in terms of your health, nutrition and activity. You will be visited by your coordinator up to six times at home, working and supporting you in embracing a healthier lifestyle through regular physical activity and good nutrition.

Community interventions and workshops include various group initiatives open to all members of the community such as:

  • Marae based workshops.
  • Pedometer or walking challenges – linking to local events.
  • Healthy Eating and Healthy Lifestyle workshops.
  • ‘Passport to Health’ or ‘Give it a Go’ type projects, involving the different activity options available in your community.
  • Be referred to the 50s Forward Programme by talking to your GP or Practice Nurse, or contact us and we will organise a referral on your behalf.
Upright & Active

The Upright and Active programme aims to decrease the incidence of falls in older adults by improving strength and balance through simple exercises.

Falling over and losing strength and balance shouldn't be accepted as part of the ageing process. Like many of the fitness components strength can be regained and retained at any age so you are never too old to start improving your strength or becoming more active.

The Upright and Active programme offers:

  • Training to community groups on how to do the Upright and Active exercises.
  • Weekly community based Upright and Active classes.
  • Training for people who work with the elderly such as diversional therapists and home care providers. The training looks at teaching the people they work with how to keep Upright and Active through the exercises.
  • A quarterly Upright and Active newsletter. Contact Gabby with your name and address if you would like to receive this newsletter.
