Hemi is married to Janet and they have three adult children.

Hemi is currently the CEO for the Waikato Raupatu Lands Trust (Iwi authority for Waikato-Tainui). He taught at Fraser High School in Hamilton and is a former employee of the Ministry of Maori Development.

He is currently a trustee for Te Kotahitanga Marae, chairman of the Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Bernard Fergusson BOT and Otakanini Topu Incorporation Trust, and Treasurer of the Kia Ata Mai Educational Trust.

Hemi’s interests include sport and recreation, Maori and Iwi development.
