Be Active & Healthy

The Sport Waikato Active Communities team works to encourage more Waikato people to be more active, more often.

You might think there isn’t enough time in your day to fit in 30 minutes of physical activity. But there are 1,440 minutes in a day and you only have to find 30 of them to become active. And remember you can ‘snack’ on physical activity and ‘feast’ on the benefits. By ‘snacking’ on physical activity everyday you can build up your levels of physical activity.

Sport Waikato is here to help Waikato people enjoy the benefits of physical activity, and to be Active & Well(TM).

Physical activity can be done using every-day inexpensive equipment - in your own home. It can include:

  • Walking – convenient, safe and inexpensive. You can walk on your own or in a group.
  • Swimming or aqua fitness – a great option for almost everyone, especially people with arthritis or joint pain.
  • Dancing – try something new and enjoyable.
  • Gardening – enjoy the rewards of activity, fresh air and fresh vegetables.
  • Energetic housework – vacuuming the floor, washing the car, mowing lawns, collecting pipi.

You can also make physical activity a part of your day by:

  • Walking to the shop/town instead of taking the car
  • Getting off the bus that little bit earlier and walking to your destination
  • Always taking the stairs instead of the lift
  • Park the car as far away from you destination as you can

Regard every chance to move as an opportunity, rather than an inconvenience!
