Stand up Hamilton - be proud

We’ve just witnessed a truly marvellous sporting event right on our doorstep with the Hamilton 400.
Any event or business hinges on attention to detail, and the Hamilton 400 was excellent in creating something very special that we in Hamilton City are all extremely proud of.
The right messages were out there, and it was fantastic to see people walking and cycling or using public transport last week to avoid potential traffic.
I’d really also like to acknowledge the presence of the New Zealand Police. Wherever I went through the city, there was an officer on point duty helping the flow of traffic – and we may have even spotted Waikato stalwart Leo Tooman down at the Tristram Street corner on Monday morning? We saw Police playing impromptu games of touch with young people at Saturday night’s concert. I also knew there were 75 firefighters who were present in case of emergency. And high school kids volunteered for rubbish duty to raise funds.
The benefit to the local economy has been quoted as $20.2 million, but it was the “can-do” attitude of  amiltonians which really impressed me. Everyone mucked in to prop up the event.
